select qoutes from Riekki's Type and Image Syllabus:

"There has never been a more important time for in the history of mankind for you to use your powers for good."

"The world needs more designers who can think in a larger context."

"What is in your head requires deceptively simple depiction for others to know it exists, much less for them to value it properly"

"If you haven't yet learn how to learn."

"Your clients are more likely to see you as an expert if you never actually become one."

"Small, brilliant firms produce more of the mustard seed ideas that actually change large corporations"

Below are a few interview questions Tonya sent me about the Octane show. I have answered the best I can but I would be interested to know everyones thoughts on the matter.

The title of the show is "Make Do." What exactly does that mean? And, how
does the work chosen fit under that title?

Well... on the one hand we just needed to call the show something. The entire thing was organized in less than a month with the help of various people pitching in at various times. Kendra and I had been going back and forth in email and the title was the result of those conversations.

I'm proud of how the show came together, the event was great, the work looks amazing but looking back there is so much we need to improve upon. I kinda knew this would happen going in... yet I figured if we didn't do it now... it would never would have had happened.

The show title and the work is reflective of this kind of spirit; the idea that we don't always have what we need; we live in a world of limitations; be it from clients, timelines, resources, life or whatever... The process of design is working in limitations, of finding a way around obstacles in the hope of creating something that defies gravity.

More often than not we come up short -- or perhaps shorter of what we originally wanted. Yet great work happens when we shrug our shoulders, march on, and make do.

Was there any interesting cases of "Murphy's Law" while the show was
coming together?

Mmm... well lets see. There were lots. For one, the night of the show at it the sky opened up and pored down rain. This wasn't great for attendance. The student body was an hour late. I'm sure there are many more stories the students can tell about when they went around and invited all of the agencies. For example I think Jessica had a bird poop on her head.

"The one major benefit to this show is exposure for PC. Are there any other
benefits that you can think of for PC, Octane..."

The benefit to Octane is of course they get this amazing work on display but more importantly the work also it represents how Octane has established itself as this cultural hub; classes are often held at Octane, people study over there and they have been really great and supportive to many of our crazy ideas. If anything it's cool to see the work come full circle from connecting over a beer, working on it with the headphones on with a cup of coffee and then having it recognized in a public space.

One of the major benefits I can see for PC, besides of course great exposure and recognition, is it's a first step in publishing. From my experience of teaching a PC over the last year there are a few things we need to do better. One of which is we need to get better at publishing our work. We have all these great ideas and amazing projects with fantastic execution and no one ever hears about them. The most we do is these ideas get hung up around school, shown at critique, or end up in a mini book attached to a resume.

The work deserves more; getting the work out from the school and into the public was an effort to get people used to having these ideas out of the scactaty of school. You can't open a copy of Ad Age without reading how the industry is undergoing a fundamental shift; how everything is going digital bla bla bla... Well, one part of the shift that no one is talking about is that the Book, the Portfolio is undergoing a shift as well.

The digital shift kinda freaks people out. It's new, sounds kinda ominous, and generally complicated. The thing people forget about is the digital shift at it's core is mainly about a shift in how things are published. What is interesting is this digital shift started not within the last 5 years but within the last 20 with the advent of desktop publishing. What we are seeing more recently is the completion of this DIY ecosystem where a creator can potentally concept, execute and now deliver to a mass audience... all from the comfort of a laptop.

Most people are comfortable with the first part of the shift. The creation process. We all have these tools on our machines and learning them is more or less a matter of just sitting down and banging away at the buttons. The second part of the shift, the digital delivery and exposure is where we have to make the biggest leap and what requires the most thought. This is where we, metaphorically walk into the spotlight, and put our work into the public space.
When I look at the work of Larry and George of Epidemik Coalition or see the likes of Dave Wearner or Alissa Walker -- one of the key elements these people all have in common is a natural ability and drive to publish. Their work is all solid, they are all very talented but what makes the work great and ground braking is that it's out there... I can see it and read about it -- I can go to a a show opening or hop online and browse their ideas. As designers we often confuse good esthetics with a good story -- and really the work, our books our portfolios are just an excuse to get our foot in the door and hopefully have a more meaningful conversation to do bigger cooler stuff.

Their work is ground breaking because they have taken that extra step of getting their work out of the confines of the traditional book of of the hands of recruiters and into the broad hands of the digital space. One of the things I get frustrated with is we often confuse working in the digital space with tools and executions; flash is a tool, a web site is an execution. These are fundamental things we all need to know but knowing how to use a hammer to bang in nails and how to build a house (and why we would even want a house) are very different things. One absolutely needs to know how to use these tools to be effective and to know what is possible but we also need to look at how to work in the broader digital space -- in that it could be something as simple as having a show at Octane and then starting a blog to promote it (as we did in our class) or writing a children's book (i know we have a class called Children's Book) and then go onto a site like Lulu.com and publish and sell the book yourself. This is the shift. To quote Seth Godin, 'Small Is The New Big'... and you don't need a record label to get a record made, you don't need a publisher to publish your children's book, and you might not even need a resume to get your next job -- what you need is an idea and the skill to execute and bring that idea to market.

Well sorta... I'm moving and I need someone to pick up our Beer and Beer making stuff. (otherwise it will be locked in a POD until i find a house -- which could be months.)

Give me a call.

email it to me. As for cutting it up... why not just slice it with a blade? Then glue it back together on another pice of paper? Photoshop would be another way to go. (flatten as bitmap)

MPoe, I need your help.
Ya know the poster/letter I want to send to Chris Helms, well I have 2 sides on 2 separate Ai files and now I need to slice each up and then stitch them together. Thing is, I live traced a sucker and it's bein' a real pain to cut using the scissor tool. Then I thought I'd throw it into Ps to do it, but the text goes crazy. Then I thought to put it into Id, but the graphics are completely ugly so I didn't even look to see if I could slice in long thin rectangles in that program... Then I gave up and am tryin' to see what you think I should do. Plus, I want you to look over it before I go through all this trouble.
Sweet.

Here's a Google Maps link to the place. For once, Google gets it pretty much right. It's just down Peachtree, take a left at W Peachtree just after Spring. It's a weird intersection. You turn left, and immediate make another hard left, go down the street and take a left. That street ends in a circle, so its hard to get lost.

http://maps.google.com/maps?client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&oe=utf-8&q=iconologic&z=4&iwloc=A&om=1

Zap me if you have any questions. Bringing extra beer is extra credit.

I talked with Witt last night and it looks like tomarrow is not going to work to bring Beer to Armchair. Sooo.... Slight change of plans, looks like we will be bringing beer over to Iconologic @ 4:30. If you have questions fallow up with Mike J.
